Filters for Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S-Line lens

Filters for the Nikon lens NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S-Line

The Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S, a wide-angle lens, is very popular among landscape and architecture photographers (as well as other professionals) who use the Nikon Z mirrorless system. As its 14mm focal length is very wide-angle, there are many questions regarding the use of square/rectangular or screw-on filters on this lens.

Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S: 100mm square filters, the best choice

The first obvious choice is using 100mm square filters (or “slot-in” filters), the Nikon Z 14-30 F4 is equipped with a convenient 82mm front screw thread which allows for the fitting of NiSi V6 (version with Landscape or Standard polariser) directly, without the need for adapters.

The great news is that there is no vignetting at the minimum focal length (14mm). Therefore, you will be able to comfortably utilise NiSi V6 and up to three 100mm square/rectangular filters (such as ND 100×100 and GND 100×150) together with the polariser included in the package of the NiSi V6 Holder. You will be able to take full advantage of the different combinations of filters as well as our polarisers (Landscape or Standard), which are recognised as the best available in the field. If you would rather have two square/rectangular filter slots instead of three, but with the added ability to independently rotate the two slots, NiSi Switch is fully compatible without vignetting. When using V5 PRO slight vignetting might appear, even only under certain rotation angles, so we recommend V6 for the best possible results.

We thank Rodney Campbell for the very informative review with example photos, where the lack of vignetting while using various filters together with NiSi V6 is displayed.

Screw-on filters, a convenient choice

Another option is that of using screw-on filters, considering Nikon Z 14-30 f/4’s convenient 82mm front screw thread.

In this case, you can comfortably screw on one of our UV, ND8 3 Stop, ND64 6 Stop, ND64 6 Stop filters with included CPL, ND1000 10 Stop, ND32000 15 Stop, Natural Night of the Variable ND filter. As usual, the best use of screw-on circular filters with wide-angle is one. Thus, we recommend using them one at a time, to avoid possible vignetting caused by filters being fitted over each other. If the need to utilise filters together is a regular occurrence, we strongly advise using the 100mm NiSi V6 square system. Screw-on filters can seem convenient at first, but eventually limiting, especially when having the possibility of fully taking advantage of the 100 System.

Adapting the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S-Line to the 150mm NiSi S6 & S5 system

If you already own the 150mm NiSi S6 or S5 System, you will be able to use it with this lens too, thanks to an adapter, the best solution is that of buying the main threaded ring compatible with 105mm lens and below (in the kit, adapters for 105mm, 95mm and 82mm are included). This adapter will substitute the back of your S6 / S5 (where the polariser is also screwed on if you already have one) and make operating with threaded lens possible.

If you don’t own a NiSi S6/S5 150mm system, of course there is no need to buy one, go for the 100mm System.

100mm filter holder for Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S-Line

Below are the two 100mm holders recommended for il NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4: the NiSi V6 with Landscape polariser or the version with the Standard polariser. Please note that pre-packaged Kits are also available, allowing for savings on more items purchased together.

The Landscape polariser offers, when compared to the Standard polariser, two main advantages:

  • Single polarising film, with reported polarizing of 99.9%
  • Nano Coating (NC) external treatment, hydro-repellent and oil-resistant for simple and precise cleaning

ND and GND Filters compatible with NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4

Once you have chosen the 100mm holder, you should add the ND and GND filters you most like. The NiSi V6 filter holder is compatible with the filters of the 100 System. Therefore, 100×100 for the ND filters and 100×150 for the GND filters. Below you will find a selection of the most used ND and GND filters. For the full range we suggest you visit the ND 100mm and 100mm GND pages.

Polariser for Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4

As previously outlined, a polariser is included in the NiSi V6 holder’s package, and that is an exclusive solution patented by NiSi for the usage of this fundamental filter on a threaded lens.

Two types of polarising filters are available on the NiSi V6: the Standard/PRO and the Landscape/Enhanced.

The Landscape NC polariser, also called NiSi CPL Enhanced®, has a maximum polarisation of 99.9%* and it emphasises the natural colours of the scene. Moreover, it is equipped with the Nano® Coating (NC) treatment, which protects it and renders it hydro-repellent for a very simple cleaning process.

If you would like to only utilise the polariser, you may also decide to purchase one of our three screw-on polarisers (in the 82mm size). You can find them below, in the Standard/PRO (with brass structure), Landscape/Enhanced (with Titanium structure) or Natural PRO Nano versions.

*The maximum polarisation changes from scene to scene depending on the incidence of light (Sun position) and the framed material. Indeed, the polariser only influences polarised light of non-metallic surfaces. The Landscape Enhanced® polariser by NiSi, in the appropriate situations, can reach a polarisation of 99.9%. It is possible to choose the polarisation degree by rotating it. The Landscape Enhanced® polariser by NiSi is the first choice of a large number of professional landscape photographers.
