Max is a photographer based on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides working across seascape, aerial and underwater photography to capture the coast line from unique and often unseen perspectives. From above below and at the water’s edge. Max’s work explores the shape, movement and texture of the ocean in all its forms, often enjoying the wild untamed beauty of the coast in all seasons.

As a passionate advocate for women in her field, Max co-founded the Women in Seascape Photography community, creating a supportive & interactive space for female photographers.

Max’s work has been recognised in the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the year receiving a high commended with “Oceans Isolation”.

NiSi: What got you into photography?

Max:
After discovering Scotland and the calmness I felt whilst enjoying a break away from work, I realised that creativity is something that I  enjoy and is important to me. Adele would be engrossed in her photography and I also began to use a camera  to record video footage. Learning new skills and thinking about sequences of footage, manual settings and seeing the result of a finished video was something that i found exciting. From there I developed an interest in still and areal photography.

NiSi: Talk us through your favourite shot with NiSi filters

Max: My favorite images using NiSi filters was created on Luskentyre Beach, Isle of Harris during a very changeable day of weather. We’d had some heavy rain pass through the island so I knew that there would be lots of opportunity to create images with lots of foreground interest. I opted to create a long exposure using the JetMag Pro 6 stop ND to smooth the ocean and create a little more drama in the sky above.

NiSi: What is your dream location to photograph?

Max: Antartica without a question, with the raw, untouched wilderness, vast icy landscapes, and incredible wildlife make it one of the most surreal and inspiring places I could ever imagine photographing.

NiSi: Every photographer has that one day when everything went wrong – tell us about yours

Max: I had been really looking forward to flying my drone as I’d not had much opportunity to fly it due to adverse weather. The first day calm day that came along, I was excited to head out to create some footage and images. Once in the air, the view from above was incredible with the most beautiful waves rolling into shore. I wanted to get a little closer, but got far too close and ended up ditching my drone in the sea.
