Notably it's much less likely to fall off in a breeze, but the quality instantly gave me visible sun spots and autofocus on the solar disk, which the film approach couldn't manage. Removing this is quick (which may be important in the next eclipse), so long as I don't accidentally align the grips with the lock points on the mount – but they're also useful to ensure the filter can't fall off (which would be anoying in a bag because the normal lens cap doesn't fit with the adaptor in place, and potentially catastrophic with a reasonably large telephoto pointing at the sun). Seems to work well with a Nikkor 500mm f/5.6, and I don't think the sensor has been damaged by the experiments, although it still needs a reasonably fast shutter speed. It has the same minor issue as the lens cap, that you can't get a lens hood (at least of the 500mm) over the finger grips, but that's more a problem for storage than active use since a hood would get in the way of being able to remove the filter.

Fine, if a little pricey. Needed because you can't use the normal lens cap without unscrewing the adaptor, which would be annoying. Easy enough to use, my main concern is that the finger grips get in the way of mounting the lens hood, but that's not the end of the world. The locking in place, although not the most secure mechanism in the world, is useful for storage.

It's… an adaptor ring. It doesn't get in the way of the hood. It fits the lens. Not much to go wrong, but it does it fine.
