Jack Lodge interview

NiSi: What got you into photography?

Jack: After beginning my architectural studies at university in 2014, I picked up my first camera (Canon 100D with 40mm pancake lens) and set about photographing my travels across Europe – everything from architecture to street, animals to landscapes, the process of learning how a camera works and capturing a single moment in time proved to be super addictive.

Once I started taking landscape photography seriously in 2017, I really fell in love with capturing the change of seasons. Chasing light across the landscape in Summer, walking through enchanting woodlands during Spring, capturing crashing waves as the sun began to rise over the sea in Winter, and surrounding myself by mesmerising Autumn colours – capturing the change of seasons quickly became “my thing” and all of a sudden photography became my happy place, a flow-state where nothing else mattered other than carefully framing up that composition and capturing it on camera.

NiSi: Talk us through your favourite shot with NiSi filters

Jack: It was a beautiful crisp morning at Moor Crichel in Dorset, the Autumn colours were looking fantastic and after a few hours, a sudden snowstorm hit the whole of the South Coast. I’ve been photographing the change of seasons at this location for nearly 10 years now, and have never had this unique mix of colour and conditions – a real treat to the eyes and helped brilliantly by the NiSi JetMag Pro True Color CPL to remove the glare on the leaves and really enhance the rich colours in a natural way.

NiSi: What is your dream location to photograph?

Jack: This is a tricky one, as I’ve already been very fortunate enough to visit some pretty spectacular places for photography. If there was one place that stood out on my never-ending list of locations, it would probably be Peru – it’s almost like a dream combination of my favourite places in Snowdonia, Glencoe and Norway, but with the added attraction of the phenomenal rainbow mountain of Vinicunca…

If I’m heading that way it would also be rude not to visit the Uyuni Salt Flats for some landscape and astrophotography, then down to Antarctica for my iceberg and penguin fix. Too many places to visit that’s for sure!!!

NiSi: Every photographer has that one day when everything went wrong – tell us about yours

Jack: I wish I could supply an award-winning photo for this story… but all I can give you is a terrible phone snap from a 3-day, unplanned adventure away from home during the famous Beast from The East back in March 2018.

My good friend Andy Farrer had picked me up during the blizzard, inviting me out to photograph snow for the very first time. Little did we know that we’d get the car stuck at the bottom of a hill, snowed in with ice rain covering the doors and having to take shelter in a local pub to keep warm – the best part? My family found it hilarious that I left the house at 10am on a Monday to go photograph a snowy sunset and came back at 2pm on a Wednesday with ZERO decent photos to show for it.

There’s even more to the story than that, but I’ll just leave you with an idea on how bad it got… Andy had to send his beloved Saab to the scrapyard a few months after this trip, and it was all my fault from our time in the snow!
